30 years of Marreyt Classics activity - Part III: My Citroën 2CV Episode

2018 was a year of celebration, as it was exactly thirty years that Bernard Marreyt founded Marreyt Classics! It doesn't seem that long ago: the years have simply flown by, and this is all thanks to the fascinating classic car adventures that we've had along the way, together with all of you. In each newsletters we will tell you some of these captivating stories as we guide you through the history of Marreyt Classics, from the early beginnings to where we are today.

"Getting more and more interested in the technical side of automobiles, the simplicity of concept and the road efficiency of the Citroën 2CV started to fascinate me. It was the beginning of a very long row of 2 CV, Dyane and Ami models passing through my hands.

At the age of 19, stubborn as I was, I decided to live financially totally independent from my family. During 4 years I financed my studies at the Brussels University VUB (I obtained a master's degree in medical microbiology) mostly by buying, selling and repairing CitroŽn 2CV cars. I knew and visited all the CitroŽn garages in the area and studied the second-hand ads in the newspapers to source these 2CVs. A derelict farm in the beautiful Pajottenland, the area where I grew up, was my workshop. There I could work undisturbed each time I became short of finances (as a student the necessary monthly budget wasn't huge!).

In those years, the Citroën 2CV was extremely popular amongst students. As a result, my customers were very often my fellow students. Alternatively I was very successful advertising these reconditioned 2 CVs in the "Vlan" a weekly Brussels all letterbox publicity newspaper. My bookkeeping was simple. In a notebook, I only allowed 1 line per car describing briefly the characteristics, the price and the name of the person I bought it from and ditto for the person to whom I sold it to. When I reached number 100, I decided to stop this bookkeeping. But many more 2 CVs followed...

Even today I am quite sure I could blindfoldedly dismantle the engine of a Citroën 2CV!

After graduating from university, I discovered it was much easier to earn my living by exercising my profession as a microbiologist. But ! In my free time, I could now work and get my fingernails dirty on the cars I really liked... classic cars!"

Classic car shows, past and future

Thank you to all our clients, suppliers, colleagues and friends who visited us during Interclassics Brussels! We've had a very successful fair, with sales both during and following the show. The absolute eye-catcher of our stand was without a doubt our conservatively restored Jaguar XK120 Coupé - still in its first paint and upholstery, and wearing its 1954 Belgian registration! It also caught the attention of the jury, who named it "Best Car of the '40s and '50s".

We are looking forward to seeing all of you again during Rétromobile.

In a future newsletter, we will lift a tip of the veil on the exclusive cars that we will showcase at Techno Classica Essen. Stay tuned!

A peek into our Twin Cam restorations workshop

Regular visitors of our website will already have noticed it: we've given our Twin Cam restorations page a freshening up. Discover the wide range of restoration projects that we work on, from pre-war to post-war, from conservative recommissioning to full-blown concours restoration,... but always on remarkable and interesting classic cars!
